SAUL BASS

I have decided to research Saul Bass as he is ' the Master of Film Title Design'.

Saul Bass was an American graphic Designer and a film maker. He is best known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences. During his career he has worked for a few of Hollywoods greates film makers, which include Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. His title sequences are the animated paper cut out of a heroin arm for premingers 'The Man With th Golden Arm', thetext racing up and down which becomes a high angle shot of the United Nations building in Alfred Hitchchocks North by Northwest and the disjointed text that raced together and was pulled apart for Psycho. Saul Bass designedthe sixth AT&T Bell System logo. He also designed AT&Ts globe logo after the break up of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines 1968 jetstream logo which became the most recognized air line industry logo of the 1970s.




'I want everything we do to be beautiful. I don't give a damn weather the client thinks it's worth worth anything, or weather it is worth anything. It's worth to me. It's teh way I want to live my life. I want to make beautiful,  even if no one cares' Says Saul Bass.





This is a title sequence made by Saul Bass. This title sequence has been made for ' The Man With the Golden Arm'. Even thought this title sequence is simply made in black and white it is rather successful. This is because the white lines used in the black backroung are moving in from the sides, this makes it affective. This fact creates a good hidden message which involves drugs. These lines give of the fact of drugs as the lines are white and normally drugs are this colour. The text used is rather small and simple, this is a good type to use as it is quite mysterious this is because it does not give away the theme of the film. The arm in the very end is very creapy as it does not look normal, by the fact of it being wobly and broken. This gives away the creaoy side of the film.
